Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen (formely known as Xaman-ha) is the second most important tourist destination in the Cancun - Xcaret - Tulum corridor. For many years, it was where the ferry embarked for Cozumel.
Today only 40 minutes from Cancun International Airport, is has become the chosen destination of many tourists eager to return to nature.
In spite of having become an important tourism development, Playa (as it is commonly known) has managed to conserve the picturesque air of a quiet fishing town. The main street (Quinta Avenida), open only to pedestrians, is the site of most local attractions.
The shops are filled with clothing and handcrafts and countless curios not only from Mexico, but also from faraway lands like Bali and Tibet.
There is also a wide variety of restaurants and cafes with a relaxed atmosphere, specializing in regional dishes, continental, vegetarian, Italian, Chinese, and Japanese cuisine as wellas sea food. . |

Most of the restaurants have live musisc from Rock to Reggae, includes Blues and Jazz, and the gayest tropical rhythms. Sit at one of the many terraces to enjoy an exotic drink and a good band, and there are also street performers showcasing different traditional styles, trios with their repertories of traditional Mexican ballads, "huapango" musicians from the state of Veracruz to delight audiences with their songs; fascinating ritual dances of the "concheros" ; Chiapan marimbas; and the unforgettable flying acrobats from Papantla who whirl impressively in the air.
When night falls, open air dancing begins at seaside bars as everyone enjoys the breathtaking view. On the horizon, the lights of the island of Cozumel sparkle alongside the stars, and the moonlight illuminates the fishing boats. The people in Playa always welcome casual conversation and are especially friendly to newcomers. You'll never be lonely here and you'll enjoy the time spent with new friends. During the day, enjoy the beautiful fine white sandy beaches and the tranquil crystalline waters. The main bay is the most popular and offers a variety of conveniences: restaurants, bars, beach volleyball nets, massages under the palm trees and water sports.
If you walk along the beach, either north or south, you'll find semi-deserted beaches, ideal spots for meditation, sunbathing or swimming. For ecologically-minded tourist, Playa del Carmen is the starting point for many interesting guided tours of the area. Thanks to its relaxed atmosphere, vibrant nights, countless activities and geographical location in the heart of the Mayan World, Playa del Carmen is the perfect vacation spot. Once you discover the magic of the Mexican Caribbean you'll cherish your memories forever. |
